Information About Fasting

- What is Fasting?

Simply stated, biblical fasting is refraining from food for a spiritual purpose. According to the Bible, there are three duties of every Christian: give, pray and fast. Biblical fasting takes a lot of discipline and strength—strength which you can only receive from God. Your private discipline will bring you rewards in Heaven, says Matthew 6.

- Types of Fast

There are several types of fasting. The one you choose is between you and God. He will honor your best sacrifice.

Liquids Only Fasting
This consists of eliminating all food and drinking only water and fruit/vegetable juices. It’s important to consume the adequate amount of liquid to avoid dehydration.

Partial Fasting
Consists in eliminating certain foods from your diet for a specific period of time. For example: From 6:00 am to 3:00 pm or from sunrise to sunset.

Absolute Fasting
Abstain from certain foods and liquids for 21 days. Additionally you can take the time to abstain, renounce, or give up, etc. certain things that take time from your day and dedicate it to God, such as: Internet, television or any other thing you might identify.

- Importance of Fasting

Often in the Bible it is described how the people of God fasted before a great victory, miracle or answer to a prayer

Moses fasted before receiving the 10 Command-ments. Moses was there with the Lord 40 days and 40 nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote the commandments on the tablet. Exodus 34:28

Jesus fasted during His victory over temptation.
For 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness He was tempted by the devil. He did not eat anything during those 40 days, and when the time had come, He was hungry. Luke 4:2

The first Christians fasted during different seasons to make decisions. As they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, separate Barnabus and Saul to the task that he had called them to. “After they had prayed and fasted, they laid their hands over them and they were sent.” Acts 13:2-3
